Corn and Berries Belong Together
This is an easy-breezy, no-bake treat, but it does require a bit of planning ahead because it needs a good amount of time to chill—at least 8 hours. You can leave it chilled for up to 48 hours before the berries start to lose their integrity — a perfect make-ahead dessert.
Berry Cornbread Ice Box Cake
This no-bake icebox cake is an easy make-ahead dessert, with the refrigerator doing all the work. I love using Trader Joe's Cornbread Crisps because corn and berries are one of my favorite flavor combinations. A pinch of Chinese five-spice with the strawberries and ground coriander with the blueberries adds subtle depth that makes the fruit flavors pop.

Fresh Tomato Soup
Maybe not quite as fast as opening a can and adding water but almost, and with a chunky stew-like texture, this soup is oh so satisfying.
Do You Hide Food?
I hide food. Not just from Nick, but also from Holden. (Who, let’s be clear, is ten.) I know that this is some weird childhood shit. My sister and I have both had bizarre issues when it comes to “our stuff” since we were little. Here's how it plays out.
Food with Mark Bittman: Kevin Boehm
Kevin Boehm co-founded the Boka Restaurant Group nearly 25 years ago and now runs 35 restaurants across Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. He also lived in his car, wrote a fake resume to get his first restaurant job, and spent two decades drinking heavily to manage bipolar disorder before getting sober. Mark and Kate talk with Kevin about what hospitality actually means, how trauma shapes restaurant people, and the note slipped into his menu that changed the way he thought about his career.
Spicy Cheddar Bread with Gochugaru
Several years ago, a colleague developed a recipe for a spicy cheese bread, filled with little pockets of Monterey Jack cheese and lots of red pepper flakes throughout. Yeasty bread, milky cheese, and prickly spice. I loved the combination, so I set out to create my own recipe.
