Warm-Punched Riesling (or Fancy Grape Juice)

Mulled wine meets Creamsicle, preferably in a pretty teacup. If Riesling doesn't float your marshmallow, choose something else on the sweet side to balance the warmth of vanilla and brightness of orange peel, like muscadet or muscato, tawny or ruby port, or even an ice wine.

Makes 2 drinks 1x

Time 10 minutes

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 small orange
  • 2 inches vanilla bean
  • 2 teacups Riesling or dessert wine (or use white or rose grape juice, about 12 ounces)

Instructions

  1. Use a vegetable peeler to remove the outer peel of the orange in a few big pieces, leaving as much of the bitter pith behind as possible. Cut the vanilla bean down one length to expose the seeds.
  2. Put the wine (or juice), orange peel, and the vanilla in a medium non-reactive saucepan over medium-low heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the wine starts to steam and form tiny bubbles. Cover and remove from the heat to steep for a couple minutes.

  3. Strain the spiced beverage  into warm tea cups or mugs (many vanilla seeds will slip through to decorate the drink) and start sipping.
