Caramelized Bananas

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • Pinch of salt
  • 4 ripe bananas

Put 4 tablespoons butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 2 tablespoons honey, a pinch of salt, and 1/4 cup water in a medium skillet over medium heat. Cook, stirring frequently, until the sugar dissolves and the mixture thickens and darkens, about 10 minutes.

Peel and slice the bananas at an angle into ovals about 1/2 inch thick.

Add the bananas to the skillet and cook until warm and coated with caramel sauce. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Recipe variations

Caramelized Chile-Lime Bananas
Use 1/4 cup lime juice instead of the water and add 1 teaspoon chili powder or ground chile (like ancho or chipotle), to taste.

Chocolatized Bananas
Substitute 1/2 cup cream for the butter and water and 4 ounces chopped dark chocolate for the sugar and honey. You can also use white chocolate if you like.
