Some mornings you’ve just got to have a milkshake. Choose from the main recipe, which tastes like a Creamsicle, or from a rainbow of colors that magically includes chocolate.

Makes 1 to 2 servings (about 1 1/2 cups) 1x

Time 10 minutes

Units Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 large orange
  • 1/2 large banana
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (if you like)
  • 1 cup ice cubes, plus more as needed

Instructions

  1. Peel the orange and separate the fruit into sections. Pinch out any seeds and put the sections in the blender. In this order, add the banana, yogurt, vanilla, if you’re using it, and ice.
  2. Put the lid on the blender and turn the machine on at the lowest speed. As the ingredients begin to purée, increase the speed slowly until the smoothie is the texture you want. To make it slushier, add another ice cube or two. Or to make it thinner (or help the machine grind better), add water, 1 tablespoon at a time. Drink the smoothie as soon as possible so it stays icy. (Or put it in a stay-cold cup so x you can sip it slowly.)

Recipe variations

Blue Smoothie.

Instead of the orange, use 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries. If you use frozen fruit, you might not need any ice, so add it, if you like, after the rest of the ingredients are blended.

Red Smoothie.

Instead of the orange, use 1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries or raspberries. If you use frozen fruit, you might not need any ice, so add it, if you like, after the rest of the ingredients are blended.

Green Smoothie.

You won’t taste any vegetables in here. Instead of the orange, use 1 cup packed baby spinach leaves and the juice of 1/2 lemon.

Chocolate Chip Smoothie.

Use a whole banana for this and skip the orange. Add 1 ounce dark chocolate—2 tablespoons of chocolate chips or about 1/3 of a 3-ounce chocolate bar (broken into big pieces).
