Ingredients

  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 2 teabags hibiscus tea (or 4 teaspoons loose tea packed in a tea ball; or try another floral herb tea like lavender or lemongrass)
  • 1 teaspoon flaky salt
  • 1 teaspoon turbinado or brown sugar
  • Pinch black pepper
  • Pinch cayenne or other dried ground red chiles
  • Sugar to taste
  • 1 lime
  • Tequila to taste (optional)
  • A couple drops triple sec (optional)

Instructions

  1. Set the water to boil. On a small plate or saucer combine the salt, sugar, pepper, and chile.
  2. Use a teapot of heatproof measuring cup to brew the tea in the boiling water until it’s as strong as you like. Halve the lime and run the cut halves around the rim of two heatproof glasses or mugs. Swirl the upside-down glasses into the seasoning mixture to coat the rims. Squeeze in the juice from the lime and stir in some sugar if you’d like.

  3. If you’re using tequila and triple sec, pour them into the prepared glasses, then add the hot tea and stir. Taste and add more sugar if you’d like and serve.
