Our guest on Food with Mark Bittman today is Patrick Joyce, who is a leading British social historian and the author of Remembering Peasants: A Personal History of a Vanished World, which just came out last week.

Joyce is actually descended from Irish peasants, and weaves personal stories — as well as the stories of many others — into his rich commemoration of this group of people that, as he says, and rightfully so, holds up our society, but that has all but vanished. I listened back to this interview yesterday and I wasn’t surprised that I didn’t talk much – I was too busy listening and processing, and I bet many of you will do the same. And now: Mark and Kathleen are on a three-month trip to far-flung sites around the world. We’ll be publishing bulletins from them as they go. — kb
