We have a bit of an unusual show this week, in that I am a guest: Kate interviewed me and Rae Gomes, the Executive Director of Community Kitchen, which is our effort to run a nonprofit restaurant on New York City’s Lower East Side.

Rae is a mother, writer, food justice activist, and organizer based in Brooklyn. She’s a co-founding board member and former board chair of the Central Brooklyn Food Cooperative, and supports food sovereignty work locally, including working toward a Central Brooklyn Food Hub and working with Brownsville East New York Food Advisory Council. Her writing often includes issues of race and activism and has been published in The Nation, Civil Eats, The Counter, Colorlines, and The Root, among others. As an organizer, she works at the intersection of race and food justice to address health disparities in under-resourced communities.

Rae has been a great partner to me over the last few months in helping to open Community Kitchen, which we’re going to make happen really soon—we open September 19! Sign up for updates and/or donate right here—and enjoy this very special episode of the podcast.
