Toasty and Oaty Homemade Cereal

PUBLISHED March 30, 2026

Somewhere between muesli and granola lies this cold breakfast cereal made with simply toasted rolled oats. You control the texture by keeping them whole (for some chew) or bust them up a bit (for a texture like Grape Nuts, only way better). The variation describes how to turn them into overnight oats. Whichever path you take, use the list of toppings below to inspire what else might go in the bowl.

  1. Put the toasted oats in a bowl and top however you like. (The list that follows will get you started but we won’t tell anyone how to eat their cereal!) Stir and eat right away, or let then sit, soften, and soak up some of the liquid in the bowl for a few minutes.

Topping Ideas for Toasty and Oaty Homemade Cereal

Choose a couple (or several) things from the list that follows and either add to the pot to heat before serving or pass at the table for last-minute garnishing.

  • Milk, cream, or plant-based milk (try it foamed!)
  • Sweetener: maple or other syrup, molasses, honey, or any kind of sugar
  • Ground spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, cardamom, or anise
  • Peanut butter, chopped nuts (like cashews, almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts, or seeds); (like sunflower, poppy, or sesame seeds)
  • Chopped dried fruit (like unsweetened cherries, raisins, dates, figs, apples, mango, pineapple, or apricots)
  • Fresh fruit (like apples, bananas, strawberries, pineapple, apricots, peaches, fresh berries; chopped citrus and frozen berries or mangoes are good in winter)
  • Jam, jelly, marmalade, preserves, or fruit compote
  • Shredded coconut (even better if it’s also toasted)
