Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Atlanta, Von has spent the majority of her career exploring lives, through memory and ancestry and eventually moving along to food. She produces content for what is my favorite part of NPR, StoryCorps—as I told Von, it’s rare that StoryCorps doesn’t make me cry—and also just spent a great amount of time traveling across oceans and nations to honor island cooking, which she wrote about in her new book, Islas: A Celebration of Tropical Cooking.
