Food with Mark Bittman: Senator Michael Bennet

Published August 16, 2024

Food rights are everyone’s rights

Not long ago, Mark was connected with this week’s guest on Food with Mark Bittman, Colorado Senator Michael Bennet, via Twitter. Senator Bennett had done a podcast about TikTok and its threat to national security and at the end, he talked about his favorite tofu recipe, which happened to be one of Mark’s. Turns out Bennett is a Bittman fan—and that goes both ways, especially after this conversation that you’re about to hear, which we originally ran a year ago.

Senator Michael Bennet, like his good friend Senator Cory Booker, is a champion of good food, and of food access. Before being appointed to the Senate in 2009, Senator Bennett was Superintendent of Denver Public Schools, where he saw firsthand just how much poverty and access to food—or lack thereof—can affect a child’s life. The fire was stoked. Since then, Bennett has tirelessly fought for SNAP—Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program—and for school and summer meals (think about it, what are kids who get free meals during the school year supposed to do during the summer?), and on behalf of farmers, and for a good and just Farm Bill, and more. You can see why we’re fans.

Senator Bennet also happens to be an extremely personable, funny, kind guy. This conversation starts out a bit serious, but it gets much more lighthearted as it goes—and what better time to re-air this sort of conversation?
