Jean-Martin Bauer’s family fled to America during the terrors of the Duvalier dictatorship in Haiti. Now on the brink of mass starvation, Haiti’s grim history inspired Bauer to pursue his life’s work in food justice. During his long (more than two decades) career with the UN World Food Programme, Bauer learned firsthand that the problem of hunger is always political—and like all political conditions, he knew it was something we could work to change.
Drawing from his experience working for the UN, Bauer has written The New Breadline: Hunger and Hope in the 21st Century, an essential book about the global food crisis—revealing how hunger anywhere affects lives everywhere and what concrete steps we can take to implement real change.
In 2023, a quarter of the American public have difficulty finding enough food to eat. Jean-Martin Bauer has been watching this crisis build for years, and in The New Breadline, he proves that famine abroad was our early warning. The only way Americans can understand our country’s current problems is to understand what’s happening outside of our borders.
We’re so glad to welcome Jean-Martin Bauer to Food today.
