Food with Mark Bittman: Max Wittawat and Jen Saesue

A love letter to Bangkok in NYC's West Village

I love Bangkok Supper Club, which is in New York’s West Village and serves high-end but not fancy or over the top Thai food. I took Mark, and even he loved it (and, as you might imagine, going to a restaurant with him can be, to put it nicely, a crapshoot.) So it felt like a no-brainer to talk with the restaurant’s chef, Max Wittawat, and owner, Jenn Saesue.

Max comes from Bangkok, where he graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in 2009 and competed on Iron Chef in the United States, Japan, and Thailand. Jenn is the owner of the much loved Fish Cheeks, in Soho, and when she met Max, the two had different ideas when it came to the food they’d serve at Bangkok Supper Club—Jenn wanted higher end dishes, but Max was hoping to create a menu geared towards comfort food. Happily for us, they met in the middle, and the dishes at the restaurant are inventive, warming, and delicious—inspired by Bangkok’s late night food scene.

Even if you can’t make it to the restaurant, you’ll love this conversation and the wonderful energy Max and Jenn bring to the table. (But if you’re in New York, there are some tips here to get you a seat.)
