Food with Mark Bittman: Julie Guthman

Why there’s no simple “solution” to food and agriculture issues

Julie Guthman is a geographer and Professor of Community Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz; she has an MBA and a Ph.D. in geography from University of California, Berkeley, and has won numerous book awards as well as a Guggenheim Fellowship. Her research in general has been about how neoliberal-inflected capitalism shaped and shapes the conditions of possibility for food system transformation. It’s a big topic, and no one handles it better.

Julie retains an abiding interest in the history and geography of California agriculture, which is a fascinating topic, one that she and I have connected on a number of times. Her new book is The Problem with Solutions: Why Silicon Valley Can’t Hack the Future of Food, a fascinating topic (and one that applies to many topics beyond food, as you’ll start to think after you listen to the first few minutes of this podcast).
