Food is how we find each other

It was an absolute privilege to interview the great Michele Norris on Food with Mark Bittman. Perhaps best known for co-hosting NPR’s All Things Considered for a decade, Michele’s work as a journalist over the years has been flexible, crucial, and super interesting — in 1990, while at The Washington Post, she received the Livingston Award for articles she wrote about the life of a six-year-old boy who lived with a crack-addicted mother in a crack house; she was widely praised for her work during Hurricane Katrina at NPR; she attended Nelson Mandela’s inauguration.

Michele’s podcast, Your Mama’s Kitchen, stemmed from her past radio work; she was taken with how food tended to serve as an icebreaker for a good number of conversations, and that seeded the idea — she believes, as I do, that food is a throughline for just about everything. We talked about that, plus some standout moments in her (amazing) career, and many other things. (Michele’s mom’s Zucchini Bread recipe, as mentioned on the podcast, is here.)
