Pet Food: You Asked, We Answered

A few weeks ago, The Bittman Project published my article about the environmental impact of pets in the U.S. The basic point: Traditional pet food production contributes significantly to carbon emissions, land use, and resource consumption. That means that, for example, over the course of one year, a typical dog consuming wet food would be responsible for a staggering 6,541 kg of CO2 emissions—this is the same as driving a car about 16,000 miles.

Store-bought pet foods are often made with low-grade meat byproducts, food coloring, heavily processed ingredients, and excessive packaging.
