Food with Mark Bittman: Alton Brown

The writer, chef, and TV star looks back.

I never know if I’m going to get nervous before a podcast interview; there’s no real rhyme or reason to it, or at least it feels that way. But both preparing for today’s and gearing up for it had me a little wonky. Our guest is Alton Brown, and he’s been in the food world for a long time—maybe my imposter syndrome kicked in?

And yet—Mark and I had a captivating conversation with Alton. He was the first guest we’ve had—at least that we know of—who did the interview from a toilet. He was on his tour bus, where he’s now embarking on his farewell tour, Alton Brown Live: Last Bite, a national theater tour of more than 60 US cities.

Alton started his career directing TV commercials—fun fact, he was also the director of photography on R.E.M.’s “The One I Love” music video. But you know him best for Good Eats, a science-forward program that turned the culinary tv show on its head. He also hosted Iron Chef America, Food Network Star, and Cutthroat Kitchen.

Alton just released his tenth book, Food for Thought: Essays and Ruminations, and we published an excerpt from that today, here. (Check it out—it’s a gorgeous bite of nostalgia.)
