This is what community looks like.

The conversation that Mark and I had for today’s episode was one of our favorites since we started doing this podcast. It’s an interview with LaTasha Powell, Princess Titus, and Michelle Horovitz, who are the founders of Appetite for Change – AFC, as it’s known casually – an organization based in and serving Minneapolis.

The funny thing about our talk with these inspiring women is that we got so caught up in just getting to know each other that we failed to talk about what AFC actually does. So: AFC is a true community organization. In partnership with neighbors and friends, and through a number of programs that were born from community feedback, AFC is feeding people, training and employing youth, and bringing individuals and organizations together to lift up North Minneapolis as a leader in food systems change. Through these programs – like Community Cooks cooking workshops and meal boxes, and Breaking Bread Cafe, which you’ll hear about in the interview – AFC has served almost 100,000 meals and grown almost 8,000 pounds of food – and they deliver 400 meal boxes weekly. The organization is deeply committed to bringing members of the community together to eat and learn to cook and hear about food justice; and to educating young people on what it means to eat well.

The Appetite for Change cookbook, Appetite for Change: Soulful Recipes from a North Minneapolis Kitchen, just came out a couple weeks ago, and I’m so glad we had the women on to celebrate that and all the work they’ve done, and continue to do. I have absolutely zero doubt that you’ll find LaTasha, Princess, and Michelle as warm and wonderful as we did. Please enjoy this special conversation.
